Saved From Myself
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love….
As I read these words, my heart breaks. Much as I wish it was otherwise, I know it is true. Why would I leave you, Lord Jesus? You hold the keys to all I need and truly want. And yet, were I not tethered to You, I might be lured away forever by temptations that lead only to destruction.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. (Prov. 14:12).
The way of covetousness. Greed. Selfishness. Pride.
THE PATTERN OF PRIDE
Without Your help, Lord Jesus, I fall prey to pride. So subtle-but deadly nonetheless.
There’s a pattern to my wandering: I labor. You bless.
Success tempts me to claim for myself the glory that rightly belongs to You. Where did any ability I possess actually come from? What do I have that I did not receive? (1 Corin. 4:7)
You have taught me that every good and perfect gift comes from above (James 1:17).
Although I may work hard, even my ability to labor comes from You, Lord Jesus. (Having once been bedridden, too weak and too pained to do anything but pray, I recognize that the ability to work truly is a precious gift.)
THE FREEDOM IN FAILURE
There is no loss in giving You all the glory. Rather, there is freedom.
All too easily, I wander and forget. But freedom comes in remembering that You alone are sovereign, gracious, and merciful.
The outcome of my efforts is in Your hands. When I undertake a task, all that You require of me is to do my best.
There is no shame in my honest shortcomings. If I fail, You will tenderly teach me through failure. Lord Jesus, You alone are God and worthy to be praised!
