What Is a Biblical Worldview?

A hand holds the world demonstrating what is a biblical worldview

The phrase “worldview” may sound complicated, but it’s really very simple. It’s our basic beliefs about reality. Essentially, it’s how we view the world.

Think of it as the lens through which we see all of life.

Have you heard the expression, “looking through rose-colored glasses”? It describes someone who is extremely (perhaps overly) optimistic. If you imagine the expression literally, it illustrates how the lens through which we view the world (our worldview) “colors” and affects everything we perceive.

A biblical worldview, also known as a Christian worldview, looks through the “lens” of the Bible.

It’s a way of looking at life—and a means of living it—that is rooted in the truth of God’s Word.

It helps people think clearly and make decisions that are consistent with their faith.

Key Elements and Characteristics of a Christian Worldview

As with any worldview, a biblical worldview addresses the following questions:

  • What is the origin of the universe and humans?
  • What is the nature of humankind?
  • Do we have freewill?
  • What is the meaning of life?
  • Is there life after death?

What sets a biblical worldview apart from other worldview is how it answers those questions.

A biblical worldview acknowledges the Word of God as absolute truth.

Unlike other worldviews, a biblical worldview provides us with a true understanding of God’s plan for humanity. It recognizes that God created the world and has a plan and purpose for every individual.

A biblical worldview helps us see the big picture and understand who God is, what He wants for us, and how we can live a godly life.

Biblical Worldview Scriptures

If you want to know what the Bible says about worldview in detail, look no further than Scripture itself.

God created the universe and man:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1

We are born with a sin nature:

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned”

Romans 5:12

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

Romans 3:23

“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

Psalm 51:5

We have free will:

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Joshua 24:15

We have a special purpose in life:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

1 Peter 2:9

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[a] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

We are eternal beings. There is life after death:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die…”

John 11:-25-26

Jesus is the only begotten Son of God and the only path to salvation:

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12

We are to lead moral, holy lives (made possible by the Holy Spirit):

“But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:15-16

“Equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Hebrews 13:21

Why a Biblical Worldview Is Important

A compass is an essential tool for a hiker.

With it, he can find his way. Without it, he may get lost and suffer life-altering consequences.

A biblical worldview is the compass for a Christian.

  • It helps us understand why some things happen the way they do.
  • It gives meaning to suffering.
  • It provides a moral compass.
  • It helps us navigate our decision-making.
  • It shows us how to get along with others.
  • It encourages us to trust God’s Word over human wisdom.
  • It leads us to seek first His kingdom rather than our own desires.

A one who is passionate about homeschooling, I can’t help but emphasize the importance of a Christian worldview in education.

Now more than ever, we see our children being targeted by those seeking to undermine parental authority and destroy biblical families.

  • Let’s prepare our children to withstand the challenges they will encounter.
  • Let’s give them a strong foundation by helping them develop a biblical worldview.
  • Let’s train them to think critically and communicate effectively.

Introduce them to the world of ideas from a biblical worldview. We have a resource that makes that painless and possible:

will your children recognize truth?

So, what does biblical worldview mean? It means approaching life through the lens of Scripture—and allow it to influence every decision we make and action we take.
